Faces of The Fellowship: ElenaAfter being cooped up in a hospital bed, Elena’s eager to sing again...Elena is just learning how to walk again at the age of 79 after falling and breaking her hip. Before her fall, she enjoyed singing and even dancing, staying very active at her local dance studio. As a teenager, she studied dance and she kept up with it all these years, until her injury. Elena had been using the stairs in her apartment building when she fell. She needed hip replacement surgery, and her recovery included a hospital stay of two months and learning how to walk again. Most days, she has great pain in her thighs and loses her balance frequently. She also suffers from angina and needs to take medication. But Elena has a lot of patience, something she picked up during her years teaching teenagers high school physics, and is going slow and healing at her own pace. But in the meantime, she receives help from The Fellowship supported Chamah organization, which helps the elderly in the former Soviet Union. Employees bring her freshly cooked meals and do household chores and grocery shopping. But most of all she enjoys being brought to the day centre for the elderly to take part in cultural activities and sing in the choir. After being cooped up in a hospital bed, Elena’s eager to sing again! You can join with us in helping put a smile - like Elena's! - on elderly Jews in need.
