The Guardian of Israel neither Slumbers nor Sleeps

June 27, 2016

"It was a stark reminder that here in the Holy Land, we are always on the brink of war."

Shalom,

I just finished putting my baby to sleep when the siren started to blare. It's so loud, there's no way to miss it or be mistaken. An air raid siren screeching, signifying an incoming missile.  I called out to my neighbour “drill!?” She just looked at me with wide eyes and said “I didn't hear of one”.

And that's when I jetted upstairs, scooped up my sleeping baby, and ran like a madwoman to the bomb shelter, shutting the huge steel door behind me. After 90 seconds, the siren stopped. “No boom,” I thought, my heart racing and tears streaming, as I sat in my shelter, alone, swaddling my newborn. I opened my phone to see dozens of messages- everyone asking what's going on. “DRILL” one person finally wrote. And we all sighed a breath of relief. But not really.

It was a stark reminder that here in the Holy Land, we are always on the brink of war.

My mantra today: “The Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.”

With blessings from the Holy Land,

Yael
