Be Fruitful and Multiply

Shalom,

One of the first Commandments in the Torah is to ‘be fruitful and multiply’ (Genesis 1:28)…that’s one of the many reasons that Israel is a very child/family focused society.

Travelling around the world with my four kids, I have realized that many people look down at our choice to have a big family. They think that having many dogs is cuter than having many kids.

But not in Israel.

In Israel we believe that ‘children are a Gift from the Lord’. In fact, Israel has the highest birth rate in the Western developed world, with an average of 3.2 children per mother (the OECD average is 1.8).

So my most recent mitzvah (a good deed) is helping a mother of four whose husband is away for business, by having her daughter over today, and her family over for Shabbat on Friday.

With blessings from the Holy Land,
Yael
