Solomon was just a boy, barely a teenager, when he not only survived the Holocaust but was thrust into service during World War II. And still, Solomon survived.
He survived the Holocaust, and he survived the war. Then Solomon married and raised a Jewish family before making aliyah (immigrating to Israel) thirty years ago.
But now, 90-year-old Solomon is a widower and all alone. “I have children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren who try to help,” he tells us. “I receive a very small pension, and somehow I’m used to surviving on it.”
But the High Holy Days make life harder for Solomon. “I want to buy something for my great-grandchildren,” he says, “but then I don’t have much left to buy food.”
